Over the course of this week leading up to the 87th Annual Academy Awards, And There Came A Day will look at the major categories and make predictions of the winners!
- Alejandro G. Iñárritu – Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
- Richard Linklater – Boyhood
- Bennett Miller – Foxcatcher
- Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel
- Morten Tyldum – The Imitation Game
PREDICTED WINNER – Richard Linklater, Boyhood
There is no doubt that this race is coming down to Richard Linklater and Alejandro Iñárritu for Boyhood and Birdman respectively. There was some early talk about Morten Tyldum having a shot for The Imitation Game, but the bell weather awards which have gone out already have really favored Linklater and Iñárritu. I reviewed Boyhood HERE and I liked it far more than I liked Birdman (which I reviewed HERE). Both are significant cinematic achievements and I can see either director winning the prize. However Linklater’s devotion to his cast and his project over 12 years puts him over-the-top in my book. Both movies are a little “gimmick-y,” Birdman with its simulated all-in-one-shot style and Boyhood with its cinematic conceit. I think Linklater’s work will pull more weight with voting members of the Academy. Look for him to win a closely contested category.
