I AM C-3PO, HUMAN/CYBORG RELATIONS
Today, February 21, is Anthony Daniels’ 68th birthday. Without question, Daniels is best known for playing c-3PO, a role he assayed in all of the six Star Wars movies. Only Kenny Baker, who plays R2-D2 can say the same. Of course, Daniels will return to his most famous (did he ever have another?) role in The Force Awakens.
It’s impossible to imagine C-3PO without Daniels’ somewhat arch accent but George Lucas’ initial idea for the character was based on a used car salesman. He wanted C-3PO to be slick and crass, nothing like Daniels. When the actor read for the part, Lucas liked his accent and altered the concept of the character. Daniels was then asked if he would simply supply the voice for someone else in the suit. He refused, holding out to play the character onscreen as well as providing the voice during looping.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Happy birthday, Mr. Daniels. The odds of imagining Star Wars without you are 3720 to 1.
