Teachers Are Leaders Quote And Comment Of The Week: February 23 – March 1, 2015

Weekly during the 2014-2015 school year, And There Came A Day will begin the week with a quote and quick thought about Ignatian Education.

If we want to avoid the suffering of leaving, we will never experience the joy of loving. And love is stronger than fear, life stronger than death, hope stronger than despair. We have to trust that the risk of loving is always worth taking.

~  Henri Nouwen

Today begins another week of Seminars in Ignatian Leadership for me and I again feel quite blessed and honored to be in the company of 40 plus Ignatian educators who are coming together to learn more about themselves and about what Ignatius has to offer about teaching and leadership.

What Nouwen says here is both timely for Lent and timely for these Seminars. To be an effective teacher and leader, one has to love. I would argue one must, first, love oneself and then offer that same love to colleagues and to students. It’s a great risk, to be sure, but one that must be taken.
