OBI WAN WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE IN EPISODE ONE!
Okay, Phantom Menace week is over with this last post, and it’s a good one. In reading the terrific Star Wars Storyboards: The Prequel Trilogy I came across a piece of information I’d never before heard: As originally scripted, Obi Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace was the older, seasoned Jedi Knight and Qui Gon Jinn was his Padawan Apprentice.
How would that have worked? Wouldn’t that have made Obi Wan impossibly old by the time of the original trilogy?
Well, George Lucas had a trick up his sleeve… as originally written, the climatic duel had Darth Maul killing Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui Gon Jinn taking over Obi Wan’s identity as a tribute to his fallen master. The scene was written out fairly early on as Lucas realize that two reveals (Obi Wan is Qui Gon! and Queen Amidala has a decoy!) was one too many. He obviously stuck with the Amidala/Sabe switcheroo.
