FATHERS AND SONS AND FATHERS AND SONS
We don’t know that Darth Vader will appear in The Force Awakens. It would, of course, be difficult for the character to do so as he died in Return of the Jedi.
However, we do know that his helmet appears.
And we also know something else. Luke Skywalker was very close to turning to the dark side of the Force at the conclusion of Return of the Jedi. Jedi screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan thought it would be very interesting in the end of the film if Luke, after removing Vader’s mask stood, turned and placed the helmet on his own head, leaving his father to die and taking over his role preparing himself to restore order to the galaxy. It’s kind of a one-true-ring overtone and George Lucas did love The Lord of the Rings, citing it as one of the sources for the Star Wars movies.
But Lucas himself eventually put the kibosh on this concept.
It’s worth noting that Lawrence Kasdan is the screenwriter of The Force Awakens. Could we be in store for something of this Dark Luke story?
