NOMINEES

  • Casey AffleckManchester by the Sea
  • Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
  • Ryan Gosling – La La Land
  • Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
  • Denzel Washington – Fences

WHO WILL WIN

Denzel Washington – Fences

He’s a powerhouse. He just does not phone in his roles. Denzel Washington has been magnetic on screen year-after-year whether he is playing the shining hero or the more complex villain. In Fences, he gives a shatteringly complex and complete performance which will, likely, win him the Academy Award. Perhaps the Academy should have noted how good this performance was especially considering who his director was – Washington himself – and managed to nominate the man for Best Director as well.

WHO I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WIN

Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge

As great as Denzel Washington was, there was no performance this year that stayed with me and inspired me as much as Andrew Garfield’s in Hacksaw Ridge. He is utterly compelling and totally believable in a role that others would have made too simplistic and too unreal. Garfield is tremendous.
