LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Detroit 17 @ Denver 24

Actual: Detroit 17 @ Denver 27

BACKGROUND

There were plenty of times this season I didn’t think I would make it through all 16 games for this blog. After demoralizing losses and a season and franchise that seemed stuck in neutral (or worse) I thought about dropping these predictions.

But I am glad I did not.

I still bleed orange and blue.

Now, here come the Oakland Raiders in their last game as the Oakland Raiders with a crazy-slim chance to make the playoffs and the Denver Broncos and Drew Lock stand in the way?

Bring. It. On.

KEY MATCH UP

With Denver’s offensive line on life support this week, the match up has to be the O-Line of the Broncos versus the D-Line of the Raiders. Denver is motivated to get Phillip Lindsay his second consecutive 1000 yard season and to keep Drew Lock proficient. To do both of those things, the O-Line will have to win in the trenches. If they do, Denver wins this one. The running game is the key to play action, the key to going downfield, the key for the Broncos to win.

X-FACTOR

Drew Lock until next season.

Drew Lock until next season

Drew Lock until next season

PREDICTION

I am hopeful for a classic game, a down-to-the-wire AFC West clash worthy of the Denver/Oakland rivalry. I am equally hopeful for a Broncos win.

It’s a win I think they get.

Denver has found their guy in Drew Lock. They have a surprisingly effective young core. Though there is little carry-over season-to-season in the NFL, a win tomorrow would give Lock 4 wins out of his first 5 starts and wouldn’t that be nice to see?

Check that. It will be nice to see!

Oakland Raiders – 20

Denver Broncos – 31

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Denver 24 @ Kansas City 35

Actual: Denver 3 @ Kansas City 23

BACKGROUND

Hi. Still sure Drew Lock is the future…?

Hey, everyone is going to have bad days and rookies are going to have them on multiple occasions. Drew Lock probably wasn’t going to undefeated for his career. So, it’s okay that he lost.

Is it okay that he lost the way he did?

Sure. Yes. It’s fine.

But let’s not do it again this week. The Denver Broncos should be able to beat a bad Detroit Lions team this weekend. Handily? Unlikely. But they should beat them.

KEY MATCH UP

I am going go outside the box here… the match up is the Denver fans vs. the Denver Broncos. One of the emerging narratives (the truth of which is hard to assess) that fans are finally turning away from the team after 3 seasons of bad football and they are beginning to stay away from the stadium. The numbers support this.

If the Lions come out and take it to a depleted Denver squad, the fans will express their displeasure. Vehemently.

Were I head coach Vic Fangio and I win the toss Sunday, I would not defer. I would take the ball and take it to the Lions.

X-FACTOR

Drew Lock until further notice.

Drew Lock until further notice.

Drew Lock until further notice.

PREDICTION

Denver is going to get it done on Sunday.

Merry Christmas, Broncos Country!

Detroit Lions – 17

Denver Broncos – 24

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Denver 20 @ Houston 30

Actual: Denver 38 @ Houston 24

BACKGROUND

Wow did I miss on last week… but that’s okay. So did everyone else!

That may have been the most fun game this season. It may have been the most fun game in the last 3 seasons.

It was surely unexpected.

Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock did nothing last week to quell the growing mania surrounding the idea that Denver has in him a franchise type player. In fact, he won Rookie of the Week honors in dismantling the Texans and looking impressive doing it.

Beating the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead would solidify his claim on the next decade of his life.

KEY MATCH UP

Strength against strength here. The Kansas City offense, though it’s had its ups and downs this year, can be LETHAL. The Denver defense, though it’s had its ups and downs this year, can be smothering.

Which unit prevails?

X-FACTOR

Drew Lock until further notice.  Drew Lock until further notice.  Drew Lock until further notice.

PREDICTION

The Chiefs have a little too much to play for to look past the Broncos, though I wish they would. In play for a better seed in the post season, I don’t expect an Andy Reid coached team to lay an egg.

But it would be nice…

Denver Broncos – 24

Kansas City Chiefs – 35

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Los Angeles 23 @ Denver 26

Actual: Los Angeles 20 @ Denver 23

BACKGROUND

Drew Lock arrived. Drew Lock had about 15 great plays. Drew Lock was locked down by his coaches. Drew Lock has reignited hope.

Can he do it again this week against a Houston Texans team that looks to be knocking on the door of AFC prominence following their beat down of the New England Patriots last week?

Lock played well enough to beat a Los Angeles Chargers team that did all they could to beat themselves. He will have to do better – and be allowed to do more – to beat the Texans.

KEY MATCH UP

The Texans are a well rounded, hard nosed football team. They are solid across the board. The key match up here is the Texans vs. the Texans. They are coming off a massive victory during a Sunday night game. Will they read their own press? Will they look past the Broncos?

Denver better hope so. That’s their best chance of coming out of Houston with a victory…

X-FACTOR

Sure, it’s got to be Drew Lock until further notice. With four games to go in a lost season, watching Lock progress from week-to-week is the primary reason to tune in to Denver games. If he shows enough, perhaps Denver enters the off season with Lock locked in.

PREDICTION

There is no reason to pick the Broncos, and I won’t. What I would like to see is a strong game, a competitive game, a game that allows Lock to grow.

What I don’t think will happen is Denver coming out with a win…

Denver Broncos – 20

Houston Texans – 30

BACKGROUND

It was a pretty rough game. It was a pretty rough performance. It was hard to watch.

Let the Drew Lock era begin, right?

There’s nothing left to do with this season… start the rookie and picture what might be over the course of the next five games.

KEY MATCH UP

I am having a hard time coming up with a key match up for a team going nowhere versus a team in the Los Angeles Chargers that seems to be going nowhere. Personally, the key match up is me versus the next four games. Can I keep writing this blog when the Denver Broncos only seem poised for draft position?

X-FACTOR

Obviously, Drew Lock is the X-Factor. As I write this, all signs point to him starting Sunday.

Give him a look, Denver. Give the fans a look. Give us a reason to cheer.

Even die hard Bronco fans like me need one…

PREDICTION

Inserting the average (below average) Brandon Allen sparked the team three weeks ago. Can inserting the hope of the future (and the third starting quarterback for Denver this season) do the same?

You know what? Why not? I’ll go with yes!

And Von Miller, though he may be a bit banged up, always rises like a River when he plays Phillip.

Let’s start December off with a W, Denver!

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Cleveland 19 @ Denver 24

Actual: Cleveland 19 @ Denver 24

BACKGROUND

I cannot remember a time I actually nailed both the winner of a game and the final score but I did two weeks back! If my mojo is turning around, can the Denver Broncos’ mojo?

Unlikely.

The Minnesota Vikings may not be the best team in the NFC, but they are absolutely in the playoff conversation. The Broncos have been on the outside of that chat this entire season. And, while Denver fans seem thrilled with the debut of Brandon Allen (a fairly pedestrian stat day, a massively successful “give us hope” day), the team had pursued Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins two off seasons ago because they thought he was great.

He has played great lately.

He has played well enough – as has the team around him – to beat the Broncos. Let’s see Denver can pull off the upset.

KEY MATCH UP

Denver’s secondary will, likely, need its best game of the year to stop Cousins and the Vikings. The QB has been on something of a roll of late and he helped his team to an emotional and important NFC victory over the Dallas Cowboys Monday night. Denver will have to keep him reigned in or the Vikings could put this game away before halftime.

Perhaps the old, turnover prone ways will return for Cousins this weekend. If they do, Denver has a shot.

X-FACTOR

Chris Harris, jr. almost had not one but two interceptions in Denver’s last game against the Cleveland Browns. He is overdue for one this week and, especially with star Adam Theilen sidelined, there is no talent for the Vikings like OBJ… If Harris can steal one (or two?), Denver can steal the game.

PREDICTION

There is no reason the Vikings should drop this one at home to the Broncos. Denver historically is awful in the early time slot and they have been truly terrible on the road for the past 3 seasons. While the win over the Browns (the Browns?!?) has rekindled some energy and enthusiasm in Broncos Country, that will not be enough to beat the Vikings.

But it may be enough to stay heartbreakingly close.

Denver Broncos – 24

Minnesota Vikings – 27

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Denver 17 @ Indianapolis 33

Actual: Denver 13 @ Indianapolis 15

BACKGROUND

Now it’s about next year.  It’s likely been about next year the entire year but, with Joe Flacco on Injured Reserve after a disappointingly lackluster first (and last!?!) season with the Denver Broncos, the focus has absolutely shifted to the 2020 campaign.

That’s okay. It’s easier to watch a team play as poorly (at least offensively) as the Broncos do when there is nothing but next year for which to play.

The Cleveland Browns come to town as one of the biggest disappointments of the 2019 season. They are reeling. They are beatable.

KEY MATCH UP

Denver’s run defense must contain Nick Chubb. In my opinion, that’s the ball game. Contain Chubb and Baker Mayfield has to beat you. He has not shown – at least this year – that he can beat a good defense on his own.

Make no mistake, lost in the story of the Broncos’ season is that they do possess a good defense. A very good one.

(I was tempted to make this section the Broncos versus NFL officials, but we will wait for one more ridiculous, post 2 Minute Warning, game changing call before we are all in on that one)

X-FACTOR

Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman are the X-Factors this week. Much like Denver’s defense needs to keep Nick Chubb corralled, Cleveland’s offense needs to limit Denver’s ground duo. If Denver has a good day running the football, they have a chance to protect Brandon Allen and win the game. If it’s all on Allen’s shoulders, the results could be ugly.

PREDICTION

Not one of Denver’s quarterbacks has taken a regular season snap. Is there any reason to pick the Broncos to win and to eclipse their season average in points?

No.

But I think the bump in energy the QB change will give them, coupled with the fact that they made no major, emotional trades this week on the defensive side of the ball gives the Broncos a leg up and a chance to win the game.

And I see a defensive score this week. Give me Chris Harris, jr or Von Miller in the end zone.

Cleveland Browns – 19

Denver Broncos – 24

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Kansas City 20 @ Denver 23

Actual: Kansas City 30 @ Denver 6

BACKGROUND

Is the season over?

It’s over in Denver for Emmanuel Sanders.

Some feel it’s over for Joe Flacco.

It’s over for many fans.

Not for me. There are too few opportunities to cheer for the Broncos, no matter the challenges and the struggles and, while I don’t see too many more wins on the horizon, I want to keep the faith… for the future.

KEY MATCH UP

The key match up here is the Broncos vs. the Broncos. It’s that simple. How does the team react to massively under performing – again – and losing an offensive star? How do they play when their chance to make the play offs are, realistically, zero? How do they play against a team that has everything to play for?

Can the Broncos beat the Broncos? If they cannot do that, they have no chance against a good Indianapolis Colts team.

X-FACTOR

Von Miller says he wants to get “spicy.”

Bring it, Von.

I am not (and cannot foresee ever being) on the “Trade 58” bandwagon. I am on the “Change a Game” bandwagon.

Winning this one is going to take a Spicy Von.

Get Spicy.

PREDICTION

There is no rational reason to pick the Broncos in this one. It feels as though they are reeling and stuck between trying to be relevant and committing to rebuild.

I don’t think this game changes that equation much.

I also don’t think they win it.

Denver Broncos – 17

Indianapolis Colts – 33

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Tennessee 16 @ Denver 26

Actual: Tennessee 0 @ Denver 16

BACKGROUND

Make no mistake. Denver is on an upswing and Kansas City is scuffling. Over the course of the last two weeks, the Chiefs have not only looked beatable, they have been beaten. The Broncos, on the other hand, have looked like they can actually win a game and have won two.

And last week featured a shut out. In the NFL, shut outs are big deals no matter against whom they come.

KEY MATCH UP

There are two here. I cannot pick one.

Denver’s run game vs. Kansas City’s defense is the first key. If Denver gets the ground game going, they can keep Patrick Mahomes off the field. He cannot score from the bench… I don’t think.

The second key is Mahomes vs. the Denver defense. Keep Mahomes and his wounded ankle hemmed in, and Denver has better than a puncher’s chance at this one.

X-FACTOR

Courtland Sutton, Emmanuel Sanders and Joe Flacco are the x-factors in this game. If the ground game rolls – and it might – play action should be featured and Number 5 should be able to hit a few big ones. Do that, that the complexion of the game (and the AFC West) changes.

PREDICTION

Kansas City is hobbled. Denver is hungry.

Will those factors be enough for Denver to win?

If the Broncos pull off the upset, they are relevant at the halfway point of this season. Given that they dropped their first four games, that would be something, indeed.

My orange colored glasses say they get it done.

Kansas City Chiefs – 20

Denver Broncos – 23

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Prediction: Denver 23 @ Los Angeles 21

Actual: Denver 20 @ Los Angeles 13

BACKGROUND

With the monkey of their winless start of their backs, the Denver Broncos look to follow up their success against the Los Angeles Chargers last week with a Week Six victory over the Tennessee Titans.

It seems doable.

The Titans have a strong defense but their offense does not strike fear in anyone’s heart and the Broncos may have (may have) discovered a bit of confidence and a bit of swagger with their upset win over the Chargers last week. Things seem to be coming together for Denver and they seem to be better than their record might indicate.

KEY MATCH UP

Denver’s run game must take control of the contest early. If the Broncos can establish the run against a fairly stout Titans’ front line, the rest of the offense should be able to flow. Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman have been an underrated story this season and have really worked as an effective combination running the ball. If they can continue to roll, the offense should have a chance to do so good things at home against Tennessee.

X-FACTOR

At some point, Vic Fangio is going to say of Von Miller “I don’t think he can play any better than he did this week.” Will these comments follow the game against the Titans? Miller has seemed painfully close to game changing plays week-after-week. The defense as a whole broke out with sacks and turnovers against the Chargers. The Titans game may well be the week Von Miller individually breaks out. If that happens, Denver may cruise in this one.

PREDICTION

Denver should be able to beat the Titans at home and, as much as they needed any win last week in Los Angeles, they surely need a win in front of their home crowd.

On a day that sees Champ Bailey put into the Ring of Fame, the Denver defense will stand tall and the Broncos will take care of the Titans.

When Denver hits 2 – 4 after this game, will fans be able to take a collective breath and begin to say “perhaps the season is not lost”?

Time will tell…

Tennessee Titans – 17

Denver Broncos – 26
