REVIEW ONE – THE PHANTOM MENACE

In preparation for The Force Awakens, the family has been watching the original six films. How do they hold up?

Star_Wars_Episode_I_The_Phantom_MenaceIs it as bad as you remember? No, probably not. Is it actually good? No, it’s not. The Phantom Menace is a movie in search of a compelling plot. Truly, there’s not much going on here and the best parts you remember (the Darth Maul vs. Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi light saber battle and, is there another good part?) really have very little to do with the actual plot of the movie which deals with trade agreements and elected queens and pod races and aliens drawn so broadly that they boarder on racial stereotypes.

WHAT WAS GREAT?

  • Well, we do have to remember that it was pretty cool to see Star Wars back on the screen when this movie opened and, though on reflection the opening crawl told us all we needed to know to be concerned about the movie, the opening scene of Qui Gon and Obi Wan arriving on the Trade Federation Ship was pretty cool.
  • However, the only truly great thing in The Phantom Menace is the climactic light saber battle. Bracket the convenient “power walls” that popped up cutting the combatants off from one another, and you’ve got one of the best saber shows in all six films.
  • But Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu is pretty solid, too.

WHAT WAS NOT GREAT?

Messa so unhappy!

There’s so much that just doesn’t work in this movie.

  • Jar Jar Binks is rightly castigated (though I must admit that my teenage children enjoyed him as we re-watched the movie a few months back – they enjoyed him more than I thought possible) as a pretty awful creation designed intentionally to appeal to children. Aside from introducing Qui Gon and Obi Wan to the Gungans (a necessary introduction of cannon fodder to be used against the Trade Federation later in the film) just what purpose does Jar Jar serve here? Yeah, none.
  • The same might be said of Qui Gon Jinn himself. Though I know that George Lucas intentionally built the same story beats in Phantom Menace that he laid in A New Hope, Qui Gon seems needlessly destined for death from the opening credits on. His actual passing packs very little punch.
  • Midichlori-WHAT?
  • Yippeee!

THE FORCE ISN’T WITH THIS ONE

This is just a bad movie but it takes itself so seriously it never pushes to the “so-bad-it’s-good” category. It’s just bad. Think of the important scenes with Padme… okay, list them. Yeah, right. There aren’t any. Anakin is such an obnoxious kid, you find yourself rooting for the other side. The “introduction” of the R2-D2 and C-3PO completely violates established logic of the other movies (and makes viewers consider an off-screen memory wipe for the characters to make things make sense).

There is NO NEED to re-watch The Phantom Menace. Catch the light saber battle on YouTube and save yourself the headache of the other 2 hours of movie.

THE MACHETE ORDER

As people begin to really gear up for the release of The Force Awakens, many are beginning to watch the first six films again in preparation. A question that is being asked is “in what order should those films be watched? Episodes IV, V, and VI, then I, II and III as the movies were released or I, II, III, IV, V, VI as they storyline might suggest?”

Good thought, people!  Good question!

Here’s a possible answer and one I wish I’d followed with my kids (who hadn’t seen all the first six films when we chose to watch them in episode number progression): the Machete Order.

As it turns out (as detailed in Time Magazine), a very good way to watch Star Wars is something called “Machete Order,”detailed here by computer software blogger Rod Hilton in 2011. Machete order works like this: IV, V, II, III, VI, skipping I entirely because the only good things about Episode I were the pod race scene and the Darth Maul lightsaber duel, please never, ever mention midi-chlorians, thanks.

How To Watch Star Wars 2

Machete Order has lots of benefits: Most notably, a whole lot less Jar Jar Binks and super-whiny Boy Anakin. But it also makes the entire experience of the Star Wars saga more rewarding.

Here’s Hilton:

As I mentioned, this creates a lot of tension after the cliffhanger ending of Episode V. It also uses the original trilogy as a framing device for the prequel trilogy. Vader drops this huge bomb that he’s Luke’s father, then we spend two movies proving he’s telling the truth, then we see how it gets resolved. The Star Wars watching experience gets to start with the film that does the best job of establishing the Star Wars universe, Episode IV, and it ends with the most satisfying ending, Episode VI.

I cannot argue with this. Get out there and watch the Star Wars movies!

C-3PO SHOWS ALL

During the next few days, we’ll look at the real mistakes made during the filming of the original trilogy, not the ones that many fans feel George Lucas created when he released the Special Editions.

I AM YOUR SABER

It’s been emphasized on more than one occasion that there will be many, many practical effects shot in camera for The Force Awakens. This week, we’ll look at some of the coolest effect shots, all of which had to be done in camera, for the original trilogy.

Without the aid of animation, here is what the Empire Strikes Back light saber duel would have looked like.

THE EMPIRE AWAKENS…

I can’t believe it took so long for this to happen!

Have you wondered what a trailer for The Empire Strikes Back done in the style of the teaser for The Force Awakens would look like? Well wonder no more!

MAY 21, 1980 – THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK PREMIERES

Lando Calrissian.

Boba Fett.

Yoda.

“No, I am your father.”

Before The Empire Strikes Back, these were just words. After its release in 1980, they were part of the growing Star Wars legend. I was 10 years old when the movie opened and it quickly became MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME! I have no idea how many times I have seen Empire, in the theater or at home, but that number – quite literally – must be in the low 100s. I cannot wait to watch it again in the run up to The Force Awakens.

Is there a better “part two” in a movie series? Only two other sequels even come to mind to be mentioned in the same breath: The Godfather II and Star Trek II.

Empire was everything A New Hope was and MORE. Luke was older and more grizzled. Leia was a leader. Han was cooler than ever. And the effects! The asteroid field! Cloud City! Yoda himself!

The Empire Strikes Back remains one of my favorite movies. It is certainly in my personal top ten if not in my top five if not actually my favorite movie ever.

The Star Wars Saga certainly continued… JJ Abrams and crew can only hope The Force Awakens comes close to this masterpiece.
