My favorite moment today relates to a famous Star Wars phrase, but not the one you think… in Return of the Jedi, Imperial troops have pinned down Han Solo and Princess Leia and it looks like curtains from them… but it’s not, because Leia has a blaster and Han Solo loves her for it…

It’s one of the funniest, creepiest scene of all of The Empire Strikes Back and it contains more than one terrific moment.

How about “That’s two you owe me junior” and “You scruffy looking nerf herder!” and Chewbacca’s laugh to say nothing of “I must have hit pretty close to the mark to get her so riled up, huh, kid?”

But, of course, the best moment is the creepiest: the TwinKiss.

So simultaneously wonderful and terrible.

If you’ve followed this Countdown at all (or if you know me at all), you know that I am a Han Solo guy. Many of my favorite moments from the original trilogy revolve around the bravado of Captain Solo.

Who can forget Solo yelling “We can still out maneuver ’em!” and putting the Millennium Falcon into a steep dive between two Star Destroyers with a third in hot pursuit?

Good moment.

But one of his best is when he intentionally pilots the Falcon into an asteroid field to evade Imperial pursuit.

Great moment!

Han: You said you wanted to be around when I made a mistake. Well, this could be it, Sweetheart.

Leia: I take it back.

Awesome.

There is nothing in the original trilogy that rouses my emotions more than the ending of A New Hope. I don’t know if it’s the music, the medal, the shiny-clean droids; I don’t know if it’s the knowing wink from Princess Leia or the fact that Han and Luke are intentionally dressed so similarly; I don’t know if it’s the very, very odd fact that Chewbacca doesn’t get a medal himself.

I don’t know…

I just know that I love this scene.

At the end of The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo – encased in Carbonite within which, we are told by C-3PO, “he should be quite well protected” – is taken by Boba Fett to Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine. We know that Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca are leaving the Rebel Fleet to attempt rescue. We know that Luke Skywalker promises to meet them at the rendezvous point on Tatooine. But, until Return of the Jedi, we don’t know how they will get Solo back.

Following Luke’s plan, Luke himself, C-3PO, Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Chewbacca are all captured by Jabba and Lando is undercover. When Han is thawed out, appraised of this situation and told that Luke is now a Jedi Knight and in charge of the rescue, he is incredulous at best. “I’m out of it awhile and everyone gets delusions of grandeur” he quips to Chewbacca.

But Han’s most Han-Solo-y moment of the entire movie comes when he is finally reunited with Luke.

Han: How we doin’?

Luke: Same as always.

Han: That bad, huh?

In the midst of fleeing the Empire after their narrow escape from the space slug in the asteroid field, Han Solo moves into attack position, dangerously closing on a Star Destroyer before veering off and landing the Millennium Falcon on the side of the ship itself, blending into the mechanics of the Star Destroyer and hiding the Falcon from view… 

… and costing Captain Needa his life.

Apology accepted, indeed.
