Teaching Topic and Tip of the Week: January 6 – January 12, 2014

Today’s Teaching Topic:

Hard Work

The quote for the week is from Ann Richards

“Teaching was the hardest work I have ever done and it remains the hardest work I have done to date.”

It’s time to get back into the game.

Today’s Teaching Tip:

There is a certain energy coming back from Christmas Vacation. How we use that energy is what counts.

Back to work. Back to school. In some ways, this is a tough time of year for students and teachers alike. We’ve come off two weeks during which our schedules were our own. We’re waking up in the dark and in the cold. Teachers are trying to remember what they ever saw in this profession and students are thinking about making up excuses to say in bed.

Tough time of year.

It is incumbent upon teachers to embrace a different energy. It’s our role to be excited to be back, to be up for the process, to be engaged by the learning. We are asked to overcome the cold, overcome the desire to still be on break and overcome the winter chill.

Teaching is, of course, hard work. Hopefully it’s work we love. Good teachers convey that love to students.

The days after Christmas Vacation need a lot of love!

  1. I agree! I am a college English Instructor, and college teaching is NOT any easier than any other level! (I have taught multiple levels before college) 🙂
