BACKGROUND

Denver Broncos vs. Houston Texans, NFL Week 75 – 2 feels SO MUCH better than 4 – 3 would  have felt. The Broncos beat up on the Texans Monday night, not allowing the Brock Osweiler led team into the end zone all night. The defense was spectacular against the Texans, looking like a unit that is just as formidable as last year’s model, and the offense overcame another sluggish start scoring 27 points and finding its way on the ground.

Gary Kubiak’s return to the sidelines clearly motivated a team that looked listless and lifeless in its loss to the Chargers the week before this context. Oh, and don’t look now, but the Chargers come to town Sunday afternoon looking for a season sweep over the Broncos.

I bet they don’t get it.

 KEY MATCH UP

NFL: DEC 14 Broncos at ChargersThe match up when the Chargers play the Broncos is going to be Phillip Rivers versus the Broncos’ defense until the day Rivers hangs it up or the day that the Chargers begin to feature a franchise player other than him. Until that time, Rivers is the quarterback the Broncos fans love to hate and, while the Chargers seemingly handled the Broncos fairly easily two weeks back, don’t be confused: Rivers was not spectacular in that one. He was human to be sure. I like the Broncos chance to handle him with something approaching ease this Sunday in the Mile High City.

 X-FACTOR

bookerThe Broncos didn’t lose a key player to a devastating injury last year in their Super Bowl season. Yes, Peyton Manning missed a lot of time and, yes, so did Demarcus Ware, but the team was fairly healthy overall. Thursday’s announcement that CJ Anderson could mean many things – a drop off at the running back position, a lack of veteran leadership carrying the ball, a decline in pass protection. One thing it means for certain is that Devontae Booker will get the first start of his career against the Chargers. Will he be able to put up similar numbers to the 83 yards and a touchdown he amassed Monday night? The Broncos hope so. This game and their season could depend on it.

PREDICTION

believeMonday night felt better but was it a significant step back toward the post season and the Super Bowl? Perhaps. The Broncos ended the game looking like a far superior team to the Texans, but wasn’t that expected? Shouldn’t the Broncos handle teams like the Texans? Handily? Certainly they should.

The question this week is can they handle the Chargers. I think the fact that the Chargers beat the Broncos two weeks ago works in the Broncos’ favor. Primed for revenge, much like they were last week against Brock Osweiler, the Broncos should win this one going away.

If they do, Bronco fans can set their sights on contending for the division title and a first round bye in the playoffs. Lose it and the team will be scrapping for the rest of the year.

The 2016 Denver Broncos – Week Four: Denver @ Tampa Bay

Denver Broncos @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

BACKGROUND

power-rankingsIs this the classic, so-called “trap game”? Here we have two teams that seem to be going in different directions, two teams that ended last season in different places, two teams that don’t know each other very well. For the Broncos, this is an out of conference game against what seems a lesser opponent. For the Buccaneers, this is an opportunity to measure up against last year’s Super Bowl champion.

Will the Broncos look past the Buccaneers, happy with their early success and be satisfied with a 3 – 1 record at the quarter pole? This type of game tends to loom large in defining teams. Will the Broncos perform well in a game that, at least on paper, they should win?

KEY MATCH-UP

Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers, NFL Week 1

The Broncos’ running game was all but shut down last week and while we can all get excited about Trevor Siemian (and I am!), the reality is Gary Kubiak wants balance on his teams. He wants the run to set up the pass. He wants devastating play action and grind-it-out wins. You can’t get that when your team rushes for fewer than 60 yards against the worst run defending team in the league as the Broncos did last week. The Buccaneers have  a very strong defensive line and, if the Broncos cannot get CJ Anderson and the run game going this week, they are asking a lot of number 13 to win on the road two weeks in a row without the benefit of a complementary ground game.

X-FACTOR

jameis_winston_bucsThe Trevor Siemian is no longer our X-Factor. I promised I’d take him out of the X-Factor category this week if the Broncos beat the Bengals. Beat them they did and all Siemian has going for him right now is that he is the reigning AFC Offensive Player of the week.

No, this week’s X-Factor is the QB on the other side. Jameis Winston had a great year last year and, by all accounts, he is a football junkie and dedicated to the game. If Winston has a terrific performance Sunday, the Buccaneers might steal the home win. Winston can play. However, he also takes risks. It’s possible he will throw more interceptions than touchdowns this week. It’s possible…

PREDICTION

believeDenver is riding high. They are confident. They are strong. They are ready for a fall.

I don’t think they take one here. The team seems too well composed, too well coached and too aware of the stakes. Let’s be honest, many still believe (even 3 games into this season) that last year’s Super Bowl win was a fluke. This team is playing with a chip on its collective shoulder and that’s a bad deal for the rest of the league.

This week, it’s a terrible deal for the Buccaneers. The Broncos should be able to take this one fairly handily. If they do not, something will have gone horribly wrong.

colts-at-broncos

BACKGROUND

manning-coltsIt sometimes seems that one team has another team’s “number” as it were. In recent seasons, the Denver Broncos have been very successful against more opponents than they’ve failed against, but that equation has not held up in terms of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have gone 3-1 (including playoffs) against the Broncos in recent years, a record significantly above how they have performed against other competition, and it’s hard to put a finger on why. The Cinnamon Girl would suggest it was the Manning factor and I think she’s right. There is no other reason that the Colts (really an inferior team overall in recent years) should have experienced such success against the Broncos.

Does Sunday flip this recent script? I think it does.

KEY MATCH-UP

marshallBrandon Marshall has made headlines this week with his actions during the National Anthem last Thursday night and his comments and steps afterwards. On Sunday afternoon, he will have to make headlines on the field. He has to match up against Andrew Luck mentally and physically. He has to get Denver into the correct defenses. He has to out quarterback the Colts star quarterback. If Marshall does so, the Denver Broncos will beat the Indianapolis Colts, likely handily.

X-FACTOR

siemianI don’t know what to say here. We have to continue to watch Trevor Siemian and his performance as the Broncos’ quarterback. Though he kept his cool last week, especially when the Broncos were down 10 and the offense wasn’t moving the ball. The fact that he seems unflappable may be his be most “quarterback-y” quality. He also tossed two interceptions, neither a particularly good ball. One of the ways the Colts can stay with the Broncos is if the Broncos turn the ball over. They cannot do this again this week. Siemian cannot do this again this week.

PREDICTION

sanders-coltsDenver is Number 8 in the ESPN poll? Number 8?!?! Wow. That’s pretty stunning and my guess is I am not the only one stunned by this. A defending Super Bowl champion beats the team that many had Number 1 in their power polls is the 8th best team in the league? C’Mon. I suspect the Broncos locker room has this message plastered all over. I suspect the team will feed on the perception of disrespect.

This game is more important than last week. This is a conference game against a team that has taken it to the Broncos of late. This is a game the Broncos win. 2 – 0 is coming…

NFL Draft Today Means Another Look at Draft Day

Related Content from And There Came A Day

draft dayAs has become an annual tradition, I re-post my review of the Kevin Costner movie Draft Day today on the occasion of the NFL Draft beginning in Chicago  tonight and continuing over the weekend.  GO BRONCOS!

Let’s get this out-of-the-way right at the top: I love football. I love Kevin Costner. I love sports movies. Draft Day was going to have to work pretty hard to turn me off. And, while the movie doesn’t appear to be working particularly hard at anything, it certainly didn’t work to turn me off.

This is going to sound like I didn’t like the movie and that’s not true. I did. I liked it very much. But, the reality is that there is nothing particularly revelatory about Draft Day. No one is doing the best work of her or his career here. That’s okay. It’s fine for a movie to be good and to live exactly up to audience expectations.

In Draft Day, I was hoping for a Kevin Costner sports movie. I got one. I want a Costner sports movie to make me root for the underdog. Check. I want a Costner sports movie to give the actor a scene or two in which he could be, if not heroic, at least commanding. Check. I want a Costner sports movie to supply some good sports action. Check. I want a Costner sports movie to feature a romantic subplot. Check.

It’s all here. It all works. It just doesn’t work overtime, and that keeps Draft Day in the “good, not great” range.

Draft Day creates a compelling time-lock in that all of its action takes place in one day – the day of the NFL draft. There are running countdowns throughout the movie that create a sense of urgency that feels real. As teams around the league prepare for the NFL Draft, the audience is afforded a briefly glimpse into what the pressures of committing to 20-year-old athletes must feel like. The movie, especially in its opening act, excels at creating moments and then paying them off. It does a great job at planting seeds early that come back later in the narrative. I very much liked structure of the film. As the end of the movie approached, I was caught up in the Draft Day dealings and, while the football-part of my mind said, “ah, that probably wouldn’t happen in the real world,” the movie going part of my mind simply didn’t care.

Kevin Costner hits all the right notes as Sonny Weaver, jr, the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns. Weaver, jr, is a comfortable Costner creation, witty but reserved, smart but not overwhelmingly so, dealing with all kinds of father/son issues – in short, the role is a perfect fit for Costner and he does not disappoint. Costner has an effortless appeal that serves the movie well and, when he Sonny seems to have lost his magic, we feel for him because we like the character Costner has created. That’s important, of course, because how the audience feels about Costner will likely determine how they feel about the movie. This one is star-driven to be sure.

Sharing top billing with Costner is Jennifer Garner as the Browns salary cap-ologist, Ali (oddly, her last name isn’t revealed – even in the credits) whose relationship with Sonny is an important part of the film. As always, Garner is very likable in her role and I had no trouble believing her as a passionate football fan with knowledge of the game that rivaled her counterparts in the Browns’ front office. She and Costner share a nice chemistry in the movie and that’s important, because theirs is the most fully drawn relationship in the film.

The supporting cast is excellent, too, from Denis Leary’s Coach Peck, to Ellyn Burnstyn as Sonny’s mother, to Tom Welling (let’s get this guy a better role, soon!) as the Browns incumbent quarterback. Frank Langella is given little to do other than twirl his mustache for most of the movie as he plays the team owner, but he, too, receives a nice moment at the conclusion of the movie. Terry Crews, Chadwick Boseman, Chi McBride, Rosanna Arquette, Sean Combs, Kevin Dunn and others populate the rest of the cast. They are known faces, great actors, and they give weight to the proceedings. Chadwick Boseman, known for his role as Jackie Robinson in 42 and ready to break out in this summer’s Get on Up as James Brown, makes the greatest impact. He’s also about to break big as, since this review was originally written, he’s been cast as Marvel’s The Black Panther. He bows in the role in Captain America: Civil War which opens next week!

The movie looks authentic because of the cooperation of the National Football League. There are NFL personalities cameo-ing in the movie in scene-after-scene, the logos of the teams are on display everywhere and, each time a location shifts to a team’s headquarters, its stadium is shown with a title card naming the specific franchise lettered in the team’s font. That’s great attention to detail.

There are nice plot twists, solid performances and a satisfying conclusion on hand in Draft Day. If it doesn’t re-write the rules of sports movies, it certainly knows how to follow them well.

DRAFT DAY receives THREE AND A HALF FIRST ROUND PICKS out of a possible five.

There is going to be a lot to say about number 18 this week…

This is a good list and highlights that his FIRST playoff win was against the Denver Broncos and his last playoff win was, obviously, with them.

Denver Broncos Super Season 2015 Memories V

Related Content from And There Came a Day

As we anxiously await the kickoff to Super Bowl 50, I wanted to reflect on this crazy year for the Denver Broncos – a year unlike any I can remember – and share a few highlights of the season that was…

Broncos Bits 10 – 1

Hard to know what is going to happen in Super Bowl 50, but I do know this, this football team has provided far, far more excitement and fun than pain over my over 40 year love obsession with the team. Here are some of my favorite memories of the Denver Broncos...

10 – The Broncos Beat the Patriots to Go to 6 – 0 in 2009  Though it’s difficult to remember anything particularly positive from John McDaniels’ 18 month tour as head coach of the Denver Broncos, I fondly recall McDaniels beating his old team (the New England Patriots) to move his new team to 6-0 in the kid’s first season as coach of the Broncos. If we can forget the team would go 2-8 the rest of the way and miss the playoffs, this is a better memory… For one afternoon when the Broncos wore their yellow and brown throwback uniforms and the Kid McDaniels gestured to and pumped up the crowd at Invesco Field at Mile High, it felt like McDaniels and the Broncos had arrived as a top echelon team ahead of schedule.

Broncos Patriots

9 – Manning’s 509th Touchdown Pass  – Sous Chef and I were at the game when Peyton Manning plus Demaryius Thomas equaled an amazing (unreachable?) record. What an incredible offense machine the Broncos were during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. They were a pleasure to watch. “Hurry! Hurry!” indeed.

Kateri Jeff Cropped

8 – Randy Gradishar Steps Away – At the peak of his career, Number 53 stepped away from the game. Perhaps he knew something then that we all know now – that football is incredibly hard on the body – and he wanted to enjoy the rest of his life and more power to him. It shows that character and incredible play sometimes go hand-in-hand. Gradishar is one of the best players and best men the Broncos ever put on the field.

gradishar

7 – Elway. All Things Elway. – There is not much more to say than that. Even in his “down” years in the middle quarter of his career, Elway was always magical. He remains the face of the franchise, continuing to will the Broncos to Super Bowl contention year-after-year. It would be hard to imagine any other player as the poster boy for the Denver Broncos.

elway super bowl

6 – Pat Bowlen Buys the Broncos  – I don’t think anyone knew in 1984 when Pat Bowlen purchased the Denver Broncos how important that moment was for the history of the franchise and the destiny of the NFL. Bowlen built a perpetual winner in Denver, helped the NFL continue its ascent as the most popular sport in the country and showed other teams how to be an almost perfect owner – by (primarily) hiring talented and smart football people, giving them free reign to run the club and the financial support with which to do it well. Bowlen will absolutely be missed. How special would it be if the team he constructed could win one more for Pat?

5 – “The Revenge Tour”  – Three of my top five Bronco moments deal with the 1997 team, beginning with this one. Denver had famously lost to Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1996 playoffs and had dropped games to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers during the regular season leading up to the 1997 playoffs. After annihilating the Jags in the opening round of the playoffs, they outlasted the Chiefs and the Steelers in successive road games before Super Bowl XXXII.

steelers broncos

4 – The Helicopter  – What really needs to be said about this?

3 – Winning Super Bowl XXXIII This win was something of a foregone conclusion… Denver was incredibly good this in 1998 and were heavy favorites to beat the surprising Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. And they did. Handily. John Elway was able to retire as a Super Bowl MVP and Super Bowl Champion. Could history repeat itself for Super Bowl 50?

john-elway-autographed-denver-broncos-super-bowl-33-sports-illustrated-2

2 – Winning Super Bowl XXXII – There’s nothing like the first. No matter how many great wins I get to see the Broncos achieve, I will likely never feel the way I did following Super Bowl XXXII. What a feeling!

SI Elway

1 – The Denver Broncos. United in Orange. – No matter what happens during Super Bowl 50, the long off season begins Monday morning and fans like me will step away, ever so slightly, from sports radio and following the team on the internet and will bemoan how much of the calendar doesn’t feature NFL football. Then we will step right back in.

The Denver Broncos have been one of my driving passions for as long as I can remember and, though I tell myself that I need to put away childish things as I get older, anyone who knows me knows that’s not likely to ever happen…

… especially in the case of my love for the Denver Broncos!
